FAQ
Rental Questions
1. How can I become a member?
All you need to join is a B.C. picture ID (B.C. driver's license or B.C. Identification Card) and current credit card. If you don’t have a B.C. driver's license or B.C. Identification Card, you will need a valid picture ID, a bill (hydro, phone or bank statement) showing your current address and a credit card.
2. How can I become a member if I don’t have a credit card?
If you don't have a credit card, you can still open an account but you will need a B.C. picture ID (B.C. driver's license, B.C. Identification Card), a bill (hydro, phone or bank statement) showing your current address and a cash deposit ($30 per DVD). We'll give you a receipt for the cash deposit. Make sure to bring your receipt and picture ID when you obtain the cash deposit.
3. When is my rental item due back?
Rentals must be returned before 6:00 p.m., two days after they were rented. For example, if you rent the DVD on Monday, the DVD has to be returned on Wednesday by 6:00 p.m.
4. Where do I return my rental after hours?
There is a secure drop box located at our front door for returning DVDs when we are not open. During regular store hours please return all DVDs to the front counter staff INSIDE Hello Mister Video.
5. How much are the late fees?
Late fees accrue on a per-day, per-title basis. Late fees are $3 (including tax) a DVD per day. If the rental is overdue by more than 7 days, it will be considered lost or stolen. The full current replacement cost of the item plus late fee of 7 days will be automatically charged to your account.
6. What does 'RBA' or 'Rental by Approval' Video Title mean?
Several out-of-print DVD titles, like other films that are currently irreplaceable, can be rented on a 'Rental by Approval' basis. If you are here in the store, you'll find an ORANGE DOT on the spine or back of the DVD. Approval is based on a credit card pre-authorization or cash deposit. The deposit for RBA titles is about $100 depends on title(s). The deposit amount reflects how hard it would be for us to replace that title if it was damaged or stolen. Please feel comfortable renting these titles - we RARELY have to claim deposits and are aware of normal rental 'wear and tear'.
7. How does a deposit for ‘RBA’ title works?
You have two options:
1) Credit card - We do an 'authorization' on your credit card for the deposit amount. An authorization is a quick check with your bank/credit card company to see if your card could be charged the deposit amount if required. Your card is never actually charged and the authorization will not show up on your bill. The authorization is automatically removed from your credit card in about 7 business days by your bank / credit company (some companies may take less or more time).
2) Cash - You can leave us a cash deposit for the RBA video title(s) and you will be given a receipt in exchange. Make sure to bring your receipt with you when you return the title(s). We will not return cash deposits without a picture ID and the receipt from the rental.
8. What does ‘NR1’ or ‘Non-NTSC Region 1’ Video Title mean?
Here, at Hello Mister we rent DVDs from around the globe. Some of these DVDs are not playable in normal North America DVD players. If you are here in the store, you'll find the label ‘NR1’ on the spine or front top right corner of the case, which means the DVD is Non-NTSC Region 1. You will need a Multi-Region Media Player on your computer or Multi-Region DVD player which support Non-NTSC Region 1 DVDs.
We do not accept rental/purchase returns for player incompatibility, so be sure your DVD player can play Non-NTSC Region 1 DVDs before renting/purchasing. If you have any doubts about whether or not your DVD player can play these DVDs, please read this page.
9. What should I do in the event of a lost, stolen or damaged DVD(s)?
You should report lost, stolen or damaged DVDs immediately. If a DVD is damaged, we will assess the damage and you will be responsible for the cost of repair or replacement. The replacement charge is based on the current replacement cost of the item.
If the rental is overdue more than 7 days, it will be considered lost or stolen. Your account will be charged for the late fee of 7 days plus the current replacement cost of the item. The total amount will be charged to the credit card on file. If we do not have your credit card on file, we will deduct the overdue amount from the cash deposit.
10. Can I add my friends and family to my account?
To add someone to your account (or to take them off) you must come into the store in person and make the change. But please remember that you are responsible for all of the additional people on your account. This means that if all six of your roommates and your little brother go on a vacation to Denmark for a month and forget to return their rentals, not only you are responsible for returning them, you will be automatically charged for all of the resulting late fees and/or the replacement cost.
11. How can I reserve a DVD
To reserve a DVD you need to have an account with Hello Mister Video. You can reserve any DVD up to 1 month in advance via the phone or in person. If you no longer need a title you reserved, please call and cancel your reservation as soon as possible. We do not reserve titles that have not yet been released. While we cannot absolutely guarantee a DVD that has been rented the previous day, reservations are generally ready at 6 p.m. (often earlier) but check by phone at 604.873.0113. Reservations are held until 7 p.m.
